ExpressCare - Urgent Care Centers & Best Clinics in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia

Spring has finally sprung at ExpressCare, and warmer weather with clear skies are on the way. Unfortunately for some, spring also means allergy season for many of our patients. With pollen levels increasing each year, it’s best to start preparing early so that you can get the most out of this beautiful season.

Here are a few helpful tips from ExpressCare to combat allergy season before the annoying itchy eyes, nasty nasal congestion, and constant coughing begins.

1. Don’t wait to suffer. Harvard Medical School recommends starting medication as early as a few weeks before allergy symptoms begin. Many over-the-counter medications take a few weeks to kick in. Some OTC antihistamines with fewer side effects that are Claritin, Allegra, and Zyrtec. (Please talk to your physician or stop into our clinics to discuss meds before starting anything new.)

2. Do some spring cleaning. When you have a stuffy nose, the last thing you want is a stuffy house. As the weather breaks, remove dust, dirt, and clutter from your home. This will create a safe and clean environment for you and your family.

3. Wash your pets often. If you have pets that like to hang outdoors during the warmer months, make sure to keep them clean. Just like your clothes, your furry friends can carry pollen on them and track it into the house. One or two times a week should suffice.

4. Use a humidifier. Air conditioners can bring outside impurities into your home. These impurities clog your nasal passages and disrupt your sleep. A humidifier can help clean the air, maintain moisture levels, and prevent mold.
